it's just a great day

Today is a great day!

Not even sure why, but I'm just loving it. Funny because my mom emailed me saying she is in a great mood today too. Like mother, like daughter.

oh hey. we even wear the same clothes and cross our legs in pictures.
(not planned!)

I'm listening to great music, just finished a book, and tonight I am going to a "meet the teacher picnic/field day" at my primary school. The kids are so excited and I am too. They can't wait to introduce their parents to "the American." And I can't wait to kick their butts in the three legged race! Just kidding. I will let them win. Except for the one boy who keeps harassing me about being slow because I'm a girl.

Here are the happys:

- it's sunny

- I had a good hair day

- I ate pudding for lunch

- halfway through the working week

- hula hoops/jump ropes at recess

- I've been eating left over pancakes every morning for breakfast. and everyday after school for snacks. and before bed. just can't get enough of the stuff!

- I'm not in charge of dinner tonight

- my internet is working!

- no longer sore, so I can start running again

- I wore jeans to school

- not much homework which means early bedtime and time for one episode of gilmore girls :)

- p day was yesterday so I'm getting all the forwarded emails from the missionaries. Shout out to Sister Katy Murdock!!

- oh yeah. . . AND I'M IN NEW ZEALAND!

and now I want to go for a bike ride.

one love. viva new zealand!!!

Half Marathon Coastal Challenge

Hahahaha I don't even know how to describe this.

This was the hardest, hilarious, most hurting day of my entire life!
No exaggeration.

I don't think we really understood what we were getting ourselves into. When I pictured the "Coastal Challenge" I thought of a nicely paved path along the coast with a beautiful view of the ocean. When we showed up, I just cracked up because it was obvious we weren't prepared.

Everyone else was wearing special rock/water shoes and had their laces taped down. They had small backpacks and waterproof ipod cases. Lots of people had gloves on. It looked like they were going into battle!

We registered and asked where the starting line was, and the guy pointed to the water.

What?!

The race was literally ON the coast! You either have to swim, wade, rock climb, scramble, or run through the sand. No pavement in the whole race. So then I asked, "How long do the rocks last for? A couple miles?" He just laughed and said, "Darling, that's the whole race! Better not bring your ipod or it's gonna go yuck. Your whole head is going under!"

Ohhhhh. ok. Perfect. Good thing I've been training on a field of rocks practicing my backstroke.

In a nutshell - I finished the race and am slightly surprised I made it alive. My feet went numb and I started laughing hysterically near the end. It was so hard it seemed like a joke! The race was a mad scramble of thousands of people throwing themselves through the water and bashing themselves on rocks. Hahah it sounds so dramatic but I'm not kidding. The waves pound you and you kind of just stumble around and hope you come out on top. I escaped with only a few cuts and bruises. My mental state was probably more damaged than my physical one haha. One of the sorest parts of my body is my neck. . . I think it's from doggy paddling. so sad!

It only took a quick 3 hours and 3 minutes :) Hahahaha. Longest half marathon anyone has ever run in the whole world. But I came in 24th and finished at the same time as a woman who has been in the military for 12 years! So don't laugh. The first three miles took over an hour because the whole thing was swimming in the ocean or clinging to the edge of the coast. Sorry for the lengthy description. . .I just want people to understand how crazy this whole thing was!

Pre Race

Registration

We ditched our ipods (I was so sad) and vaselined it up! The man at the entry stations told us we would be "sorry souls" if we didn't put vaseline on because "chafing can be your worst enemy"

Starting line. . .just run through the water
and make your way around the corner!

Post Race

The happiest part of the day

scraped legs and sandy socks

went to Denny's to stuff our faces

Don't know if I would ever sign up for that again, but it was totally worth it. And an even better part of the weekend is that I am now allowed to eat as many desserts as I want. Went to the store last night and bought candy and ice cream :) I'm a happy camper!

pasta dinners, museums, and rugby games

HEY OH!! another three day weekend :) here is a brief overview

broken umbrellas + rain = soaked clothes

beautiful sunsets

and sunrises

pasta feed with Emily and Kirsten

bit of impromptu yoga. . .not one of my natural strengths

such a mystery why nobody asks us out

Took the train into Auckland :)

little bums. . . I was in there!!

hmmm yes

visit to the Auckland War Museum

I can hear the ocean!

my future

some New Zealand Lamberts served in WWI!

Maori dance performance

Rugby Game - Auckland Blues v. Christchurch Crusaders.

This is my kind of football! Hot men smashing each other and the game never stops. No "30 seconds of action" like football. Instead of a three hour event, it's only two 40 minute halves. Definitely a better deal.

TGIT

It's Thursday! Which means it's a Friday because this is the last day of school for the week! I'm so happy. This has been a quick, but also very long week. I've been really tired.

Exhibit A: I fell asleep in the principal's office when he was talking to me!!! That's how tired I am. Luckily he wasn't looking at me at the moment, so I avoided potentially the most awkward moment of my life. but seriously. That doesn't make a very good impression!

Exhibit B: Yesterday I wore my cardigan backwards all day without noticing. Two thumbs up for wearing tags on the outside of your clothes. I guess I better pay better attention when I am getting dressed in the morning.

Exhibit C: Don't ask me what I was thinking when I put on these shoes. Because they definitely don't match with dress pants. EMBARRASSING. It was raining so I thought. . . I can't wear my sandals, I'll put on shoes! At the bus stop I realized I was wearing ugly vans with holes in them that are actually slightly two different colors. whoops. AND my socks show when I sit down. cherry on top!

Solution - get more sleep next week. And pick out my clothes the night before!
