TGIT

It's Thursday! Which means it's a Friday because this is the last day of school for the week! I'm so happy. This has been a quick, but also very long week. I've been really tired.

Exhibit A: I fell asleep in the principal's office when he was talking to me!!! That's how tired I am. Luckily he wasn't looking at me at the moment, so I avoided potentially the most awkward moment of my life. but seriously. That doesn't make a very good impression!

Exhibit B: Yesterday I wore my cardigan backwards all day without noticing. Two thumbs up for wearing tags on the outside of your clothes. I guess I better pay better attention when I am getting dressed in the morning.

Exhibit C: Don't ask me what I was thinking when I put on these shoes. Because they definitely don't match with dress pants. EMBARRASSING. It was raining so I thought. . . I can't wear my sandals, I'll put on shoes! At the bus stop I realized I was wearing ugly vans with holes in them that are actually slightly two different colors. whoops. AND my socks show when I sit down. cherry on top!

Solution - get more sleep next week. And pick out my clothes the night before!

yay for presidents!!

Happy Presidents Day to the states!!!

Everyone is enjoying a three day weekend :) Unfortunately New Zealand doesn't give the same recognition to US presidents (I don't know why!!!), so there was no school day off for me. BUT I still had a three day weekend with Friday off! Because I get a three day weekend every weekend :) Just another perk of New Zealand life.

This past weekend was beach weekend. Friday at the beach. Saturday at the beach.

Beach Day One

and then the tide came in and I screamed and got a mouth full of ocean

boogie boarding and surfing

After the beach we went out to dinner (i love waffles!!) and went to the movies to see The Vow. I am still getting over that movie. Not because it was so good. . . because it was so bad! I really had high expectations. I mean, I can look at Channing Tatum for two hours and be happy no matter how stupid the movie is. But really. Just watch the preview for it instead and those two minutes include all the good/cute parts of the entire film.

Beach Day Two

This beach day was a whole day at the beach with the stake YSA. I've never played so much volleyball. so fun! we also had a bbq and relay races. I found out I'm not very good at those egg tossing games. I can catch it. . . but not very gently. And I can throw it . . .but not very straight.

Hahahah I am the weakest link.

Great three day weekend.

Halfway through this week and can't wait until Friday.

Schedule for this weekend
=
Auckland museum & Maori dance performance
dinner
rugby game
half marathon

. . . and possibly the beach again :)

In other news. . .

I have been on a "no sweets/no desserts" thing for one week and one day. It's crazy what peer pressure can get you into! My roommates had the idea to not eat sweets until after our half marathon, and the day after I signed "the contract" I caved in and ate a huge bowl of ice cream. Didn't even last 24 hours. Then that night I was shunned, harassed, and stoned by my roommates for my lack of self-control. So I've been good ever since!

Still counting down the days though . . . only four more. But it hasn't stopped me from putting sugar on my toast, sugar on my cereal, sugar in my hot chocolate, and sugar on my fruit :) I'm getting desperate! I've been hoarding desserts from activities and saving them in the freezer. Can't wait to bust that treasure chest open this Saturday!!

it's all about the playlist

My half marathon is in 5 days!

I have squished 9 weeks of training into 3 weeks and I hope that wasn't a stupid idea. I was feeling pretty good about myself until I ran 10.5 miles last week and my legs went numb. I kept thinking about those crazy people you see on tv that run all the way across America and back for fun. Then when they're done they go and swim the English Channel or something.

A) I felt bad for them
B) I admired them
C) I felt dumb because I couldn't even feel my legs after running for an hour and a half. Is that medically worrisome? I don't know, but the upside was that my legs weren't hurting!

The next day I went running and I ran 12 minutes before I had to stop because my legs were so tired. Hahaha so pathetic it made me laugh. However, I have found a solution. It's all about a good playlist! New music on an ipod is so motivational to me. I just keep running because I want to hear the next song.

Here are some of the very old and new faves:

Halo - Beyonce
Best Love Song - T pain
Without You - Usher
You da One - Rihanna
Princess of China - Coldplay
My Body - Young the Giant
Good Feeling - Flo Rida
One That Got Away - Katy Perry (weird, i know.)
Gold Lion - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

oh and never forget

Pick Me - Justin Bieber

February is the new September

This is my first week at Henderson Primary school! And it's only the second week for the children. They just finished holiday and February is when they all head back to school. I am already in love with the school, the children, and the melting pot of cultures. In my classroom we have children from Tonga, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Australia, and India. And some are still learning English.

I am teaching in a combined fourth/fifth grade class and have 31 students. The school is a small school, only 180 kids. And only 5 of those children are white! They are the most adorable children on the planet :) The first couple of days I have spent time learning their names and getting to know them. It's hard when half of the names I can't pronounce! But I'm getting better at it. I'm particularly having a hard time keeping straight Kavindi, Kwanesha, Saheeba, Ngariki, Siaosi, and Taeario. I'm hoping in time I will figure those out!

I can already tell it's going to be a lot of work. We arrive before the children do and stay late after school almost every day. We do whatever the teachers do. If they have staff meetings, team meetings, or planning sessions, we go with them. The nice thing about NZ schools is that there is a break everyday from 10:20 - 10:50 called "morning interval" or "morning tea". The kids go play and the staff sits down, talks, and drinks tea. Which means I'll be having a lot of milo every day - which I love! It's like hot chocolate but better :)

Being from America is apparently a big deal!! I've had so many questions. . .

"Where are you from Miss?" (they always call me Miss. I just wanna die!)

"Washington!! Do you live in the white house? That's where the President lives eh?"

"Have you met Obama??"

"Have you met Beyonce?"

"Are you famous in America?"

"How did you get your accent? I want one!"

"What's your phone number?"

"Do you live in a mansion?"

"What color is your blood?"

"Do you like Justin Bieber?" (I suddenly made a lot of friends answering "yes" to that question!)

"Do you speak English? Can you speak American too?"

"Can you come over after school?!"

"How come you don't wear lots of makeup? Is it because you would be too pretty and people would know you are a celebrity?? Are you undercover?"

I spent the whole day not trying to laugh. When they asked if I was famous in America I told them that I was a secret celebrity and now they believe me. There was an argument at lunch about who could be the #1 fan. One girl asked me how to spell my first name because she wanted to add me to her "best friends" list. I wanted to cry! Not really, but almost!

At lunch I taught them how to play Ninja, and tomorrow they are going to teach me how to play rugby and cricket. Tomorrow we also have swimming class, which means they will all be bringing their "togs" and towels for the pool. Even the youngest children are taught to swim and learn about how to be safe in the ocean.

Today there was a Powhiri, which is a Maori welcoming ceremony at Ranui Primary for all of the BYU students. I was absolutely blown. away. The children take great pride in their culture, which was obvious when they sang and performed a haka for us. There is a strict protocol to follow for a Powhiri. We took off our shoes outside of the assembly hall, while two students chanted in Maori to invite us inside. We took a seat at the front of the room, while they continued to chant which then turned into the haka. I had goosebumps. Those kids sounded so powerful! I took a video (I am such a tourist) and the sound quality is just money! I don't know why I filmed from extremely weird angles - with this quality I should really consider switching my major to film. There's a bit of the haka shown in the video below.

Following the haka, a boy gave a speech in Maori. It was beautiful to listen to. Then the children sang their national anthem and another Maori song. The national anthem was my favorite part. The children here are brought up singing at a very early age and it's very obvious! They all sound like angels and sing very proudly (again I apologize for the crazy angles in this video).

the students of Ranui Primary

In response to their song and speech, our director's husband spoke on our behalf and we sang this song we learned a couple weeks back. It's a Maori song that talks about peace, love, and unity. This video was taken during a practice session, and we do not sound nearly as good as the kids!

On Thursday I'll have one week under my belt and then only five more! Time is flying. It will be great to come home, but I can already tell that I'm going to really miss New Zealand.
